Portraits
Sully, Renoir, Modigliani
Today we have brought 3 people we would like you to meet. Let's look at their pictures and see what we can learn about these people.
Present Sully Painting:
What does the artist try to tell you about him?
Is he happy?

Is he healthy?
Is he quiet and shy or outgoing?
Does he look nice?

Present Renoir Painting:
What can we say about this person?
How do you feel about this person?
Does she look nice?
Would you want to meet this person?

Present Modigliani Painting:
How old?
If this painting could speak, what might she say?
Do you thinking this person really look like this?
Does she look nice?
Lesson:
As we look at all three paintings together, we're going to talk a little bit about how they might feel. The way things feel is called "TEXTURE".
Touch your face. How does that feel? (smooth, rough, soft, velvety, prickly, sharp, hard, warm, cold....)
Touch you hair. How does that feel? Touch you shirt, desk...
If you could touch the girl's hat, how would it feel? (Mention other objects in the painting)
What does the artists do to show us how things feel? (brush strokes, application of paint, color....)
All of these paintings are examples of portraits. Ask these questions as you show examples of other portraits in the art drawers.
Do all portraits have to be of one person?
Do you think a portrait could be painted of a animal?
Do all portraits have to be painted? When you had your school picture taken, you were having your portrait made.
Activity:
If you were to have a portrait made, what would you wear?
What would you like to include in the painting to tell more about you?
Materials:
Bring dress up items, customs, hats, shirts, jackets, scarves, ties, jewelry, items to hold or place in the portraits to indicate special interest of the subjects. Bring sheet for your backdrop. Polaroid Camera kept in office. But digital works best if anyone in group has one.
While a group is dressing and getting individual portraits:
Options
Have children sit at desk and color what they want to dress up as with an appropriate background.
Have children sit at desk and make a frame for the picture.
