The Whistling Boy is considered the masterpiece of Frank Duveneck, Cincinnati's most celebrated artist. Duveneck, born in Covington, Kentucky, began as an assistant to a painter of Catholic churches. The son of German immigrants, he traveled to Munich in 1870 for further study in art. At that time, Munich was home to some of the most advanced artists in Europe, including Wilhelm Leibl, whose dark, unsentimental portraits impressed the young American. After returning home, Duveneck became an influential teacher, bringing the liberating aspects of progressive German art to the United States. His students included John Twachtman, Robert Blum, and Joseph DeCamp.
